Volcanoes are formed when plate tectonics go above one another and causes hot magma to rise. If they are tall then it must have erupted a lot to rise higher. Volcanoes are usually cone shaped and look like mountains. The buoyancy and pressure of the gases inside the Earth cause the volcanoes to erupt shooting out lots of magma and ash out of the top of them. There are three types of volcanoes ;the shield volcano which are the largest volcanoes; the cinder volcano are the most common kind of volcano; and the stratovolcano is tall and also called the composite volcano. The worst volcano is a super volcano which has been theorized to have caused a mass extinction.

There is a super volcano located at Yellowstone Park. They say it's about to erupt sometime soon. If the passage is blocked off, the pressure can build up in the mountaintop and explode with a monstrous force. Scientists are being cautious of the super volcano.
